There are a lot of features a new day trading computer must have
to successfully stream in a lot of market data, especially during heavy
peak trading periods. The first and most important component in day
trading computers is the processor. If you have a limited budget, use as
much as possible to get the fastest processor available, the processor
is responsible for crunching all the data continuously being streamed
in. Next make sure you select video cards that can handle at least 2
monitors per card, preferably with DVI or HDMI ports. RAM is an
important factor as well, newer operating systems from Microsoft can eat
up a lot of precious memory and if you don't have enough it can cause
your computer to slow down significantly. An ultra quiet case is
preferred so as to not distract you with excessive fan noise while you
are working. Newer solid state hard drives can really help with
performance as they do not rely on traditional spinning platters like
regular hard drives do. In general try to stay away from retail store
bought PCs. These type of computers usually have really cheap components
that have a much higher probability of failure, it is much better to
purchase a custom built PC from companies that specialize in these type
of high performance systems.
It is important to get a custom configured trading computer built in a high performance case that has ample cooling capabilities. There should be a minimum of 4 120mm case fans in your computer, or if there is 3 fans then 2 of them should be the larger 200mm fans. Many custom built computers are sold in cheap cases with only one intake fan and one exhaust fan, this isn't adequate cooling for a high performance rig. The power supply is often overlooked, it should be at a minimum of 550 Watts (620 or 850 Watts is even better.) We recommend SeaSonic brand power supplies, they will last much, much longer than other name brand or generic PSUs put in other computers. SeaSonic power supplies are ultra quiet and have the most stable voltages of any brand on the market. A high quality SSD (solid state drive) from Samsung, Intel or Kingston is a must for the boot drive. SSD drives are faster and last much longer than standard mechanical hard drives. Samsung EVO drives are currently very popular, they are among the fastest brands out.
